Carl Hansen & Søn has produced furniture in Denmark since 1908, bringing together skilled craftsmanship, natural materials and the work of some of the most influential designers of the modern era.

Its collection includes furniture by Hans J. Wegner, Kaare Klint, Børge Mogensen, Ole Wanscher, Arne Jacobsen and Poul Kjærholm, alongside work by contemporary designers.

Across the collection, proportion, comfort, construction and natural materials are treated as part of the same design decision.

Carl Hansen & Son

At Hobson’s Choice, we look beyond the reputation of an individual chair or table. We consider how the scale, material, comfort, and character of each piece relate to the surrounding architecture.

A dining chair must work with the table, the kitchen, the room’s proportions, and how the space is used. A lounge chair may provide contrast, introduce a more tactile material or create a place to pause within a larger open-plan interior.

The aim is to choose furniture that works with the room and the way you use it.

Proportion, comfort and materials

Proportion

We consider the room’s dimensions and the routes around each piece. We also look at the height of nearby cabinetry and the relationship between the furniture, flooring and other materials.

Comfort

We discuss how the room will be used. A table may need to accommodate larger gatherings, while a chair may be occupied for a few minutes or an entire evening.

Materials

These decisions help us recommend dimensions, timber, upholstery and finishes that suit both the room and its daily use.

Many pieces are still produced using the methods specified for their original designs. Combined with the natural variation of timber and leather. Natural timber and leather can develop greater variation and character through use.

We help clients understand these material choices before specifying a piece, including how different timber treatments, upholstery options and everyday care will affect its appearance over time.

Finishes & Specification

Selecting the finish with the room in mind

Selecting the design is only part of the decision. Timber, surface treatment, upholstery and colour can substantially change how a piece sits within the room.

Our designers can compare samples against cabinetry, flooring, worktops and other finishes, helping clients decide whether the furniture should blend with the interior or provide a deliberate point of contrast.
