the brief

This contemporary bulthaup b3 kitchen display at our Winchester design studio was created to demonstrate how darker kitchen finishes can be combined with natural wood and stainless steel without making the space feel heavy.

Anthracite lacquer forms the centrepiece of the design, balanced by Matte Grey Oak tall cabinetry and warmer walnut details. The result is a modern kitchen that feels architectural and refined, while still retaining the warmth and texture of natural materials.

The Design

Anticipating needs

The kitchen is arranged around a substantial island, creating a practical space for food preparation while allowing the cook to remain connected with people seated nearby.

Storage is incorporated on both sides of the island. Push-to-open cupboards provide discreet storage to the front, while deep drawers on the working side keep cooking equipment and utensils close to hand.

The dark Anthracite lacquer gives the island a strong, contemporary presence. A slim stainless steel worktop creates a precise horizontal line above it, while the grain of the Matte Grey Oak tall cabinetry softens the overall palette.

Raising the island on slender legs adds another important detail. Rather than meeting the floor as a solid block, the furniture appears lighter within the room, helping a large dark kitchen island feel less imposing.

The Design

Combining Anthracite, Oak and Stainless Steel

Dark kitchen furniture can create depth and definition, but the choice of surrounding materials has a significant influence on how the finished space feels.

Here, the natural texture of Grey Oak introduces warmth alongside the Anthracite lacquer, while stainless steel provides a clean, understated working surface. The combination creates contrast without relying on bold colour, making it suitable for a contemporary interior where materials and proportions provide the visual interest.

Inside the drawers, bulthaup organisational systems are finished in walnut. The warmer timber provides another layer of natural detail and coordinates with the walnut interior of the bulthaup b3 Pocket Door.

Functionality

Integrated Kitchen Storage

The bulthaup b3 Pocket Door provides accessible storage for frequently used items while allowing them to be concealed when they are not required.

When opened, the doors reveal a warm walnut interior with space for everyday kitchen equipment and ingredients. When closed, the storage becomes part of the uninterrupted run of tall Grey Oak cabinetry.

This ability to combine accessible working storage with a calm exterior is particularly useful in contemporary kitchens where reducing visual clutter is an important part of the design.

Functionality

Stainless Steel Worktop and Integrated Sink

The island is finished with a slim 10mm bulthaup b3 stainless steel worktop incorporating a seamlessly integrated sink.

Forming the sink and work surface as one continuous material creates a particularly clean junction, with no raised rim between the worktop and bowl. Alongside its minimalist appearance, stainless steel provides a practical working surface well suited to food preparation.

A bulthaup mixer tap completes the sink area, maintaining the restrained material palette of the island.

Functionality

Cooking and Appliances

A Miele induction cooktop is positioned within the island, allowing cooking to remain part of the social side of the kitchen rather than facing a wall.

Above it, a bulthaup b3 extractor provides dedicated ventilation while complementing the simple architectural form of the furniture.

Further Miele appliances for cooking, cooling and cleaning are integrated within the tall cabinetry, helping maintain the clean lines of the overall design.
