Small Ensuite, Big Impact

This compact master ensuite in a Wiltshire village proves that limited space needn’t limit the quality of the finished bathroom.

The long, narrow room presented an awkward footprint, but careful spatial planning, reflective surfaces and considered lighting have created a contemporary ensuite that feels more open, balanced and inviting.

This compact master ensuite in a Wiltshire village proves that limited space needn’t limit the quality of the finished bathroom.

The long, narrow room presented an awkward footprint, but careful spatial planning, reflective surfaces and considered lighting have created a contemporary ensuite that feels more open, balanced and inviting.

the brief

The homeowners wanted to transform their small master ensuite into a contemporary bathroom that made considerably better use of the available space.

Its long, narrow proportions were the main challenge. Rather than filling the room with features, the design needed to improve the sense of space while providing a generous shower, useful storage and the calm, sophisticated character expected of a master ensuite. Removing the existing bath provided the opportunity to reconsider how the whole room could work.

The Design

The Plan

With the bath removed, greater emphasis could be placed on the shower area and on creating a clearer, more comfortable route through the room.

The challenge was preventing the narrow layout from feeling like a corridor.

A decorative Rimadesio Sail fixed screen, positioned in front of the shower enclosure, provides an elegant visual break within the room. Its dark Nero frame introduces architectural definition while helping interrupt the long sightline through the space.

Reflective surfaces were then used strategically rather than decoratively. Mirrored cabinetry, carefully positioned lighting and the subtle sheen of the finishes help move light around the room, increasing the impression of width and depth.

The result demonstrates how the perceived proportions of a small bathroom can be changed without altering its physical footprint.

The Design

The Finished Space

The completed ensuite feels distinctly more spacious while retaining a strong contemporary identity.

A restrained palette of grey and neutral tones creates continuity throughout the room, with Corian cladding and Porcelanosa tiles providing a calm backdrop for the darker detailing.

The Rimadesio screen adds contrast without enclosing the shower area, while streamlined fittings and integrated storage keep visual clutter to a minimum.

Rather than attempting to disguise the room’s size, the design makes intelligent use of it. Every element contributes to a bathroom that feels comfortable, considered and appropriate for its role as a master ensuite.

“The new bathroom feels both inviting and relaxing to be in, and although small, it certainly is a statement.”
Philip Harrison, Design Consultant
